Zirconia is a great option to consider for dental veneers due to its unparalleled strength and durability. Zirconia has the ability to be placed in a smaller thickness compared to Emax. For structure and integrity, zirconia is a great option. But it comes with a downside. Zirconia has a low translucency attribute that isn’t able to recreate the same translucency of our natural enamel. So zirconia can be identified as the material of choice.

Emax is by far the best material to consider for dental veneer treatment. Emax veneers excel in the aesthetics department. The high translucency attribute of emax allows a restored tooth to resemble the natural enamel on the face of a tooth. Because of this attribute, Emax can identify the natural tooth’s colour and so a bleach white colour is added to the veneer. Emax veneers are the right choice for people with straight teeth that are slightly discoloured, have large gaps between teeth and for those with small lateral incisors.

The process of veneer treatment involves preparing the natural teeth and selecting a material, style and colour of a veneer to be placed on the front of teeth. The veneer is only suitable for front teeth as it only covers the front side of a tooth. Teeth are shaved down 1mm by a specialised aesthetic dentist using dental tools. Impressions are then taken using a dental putty. The putty is self-hardening over a minute. These impressions are then used to recreate a 3D model of your upper and lower jaw.

The laboratory is then able to scan a virtual model into our high tech computer software. CAD technology is used in combination with the dentist’s technical requirements and the patient’s selection of design style and colour to digitally create veneers. These veneers are functionally and aesthetically optimised on the computer.

Once optimised, zirconia or emax blocks are CAM machine-guided and precision cut accordingly. Using the rehearsal method, the doctor will make minor adjustments to the veneers to ensure aesthetic and function is perfect. The veneer is then cemented in place with a dental glue. Patients are then required to wait an hour before eating to allow the dental adhesive to set.

Dental veneers are purely an aesthetic restoration option and so patients with certain conditions would be better suited to have crowns or implants. Emax and zirconia dental veneers are a very good option for patients with diastema (abnormally larger gaps between teeth), patients who are unable to improve the whiteness of their natural teeth. Slight teeth alignment deviation issues, uneven smile line, the resizing of small lateral incisors and fractured or cracked teeth.
